Stress is a constant companion for many of us. It is also a significant factor in our overall health. Stress can lead to a wide range of illnesses and adverse bodily reactions.

The ability to relax is an acquired skill.
Thankfully, you can teach yourself to handle stress in a manner that minimizes it. However, the more stressed you feel, the more challenging it can be to relax.

The following are 5 habits I have developed over the years that allow me to reduce as much stress out of my life as I possibly can. In doing so, I have gained a greater appreciation of this life we all share.

This isn’t a step by step process. You don’t need to do all of these every single day, but you should make it an overall mission to implement all of these into your daily life.

1. Stretch

Stand up for a few minutes and stretch your body. Release the tension and stress in your muscles. Shake your arms and legs individually and get back to work. Try this. It works! I promise!

2. Get Some Exercise

There is no expectation that you need to be an athlete. You really do need to even invest money into this. But it's incredibly important that you get up and move about during the day. Personally, I like to make sure I get in at least 10,000 steps a day. Some days it's easy, but other days I have to actively get up and walk around.

But that little bit of exercise gets the heart pumping and oxygen flowing better through your body.

If you really want to burn off some stress, do so by burning off calories.

3. Crank Up the Tunes

Music can be mind altering.

The theme from Rocky might make you feel great, but might not be the best choice if you’re feeling agitated. Choose music that you find relaxing.

I’ll commonly ask Siri or Alexa to play relaxing music. Then I’ll just pop on my AirPods and allow the sounds to bring ease my mind.

4. Laugh

Laughter is the best medicine. At any given minute, Netflix has counting hours of comedy that can get you belly aching from laughter. Tune into your favorite comedian and enjoy a set of great comedy to keep the joy in your life.

Laughter triggers the natural release of endorphins in your body. That's the stuff that makes us feel good which eases the tension and stress in our body.

5. Nutrition

Putting the right nutrition into your body can go a long way towards alleviating the stresses. It is important to remember that while most of the stresses we experience our in our minds, our bodies also experience stress as well. What affects the body, affects the mind, and vice versa.
